Our Flag/Our Country
Topic - Citizenship/Civic Education

This activity can be used to supplement the “Our Flag” or “Our Country” lessons in the Cloverbud Curriculum, or, it's a great activity to use around the 4 th of July when talking to Cloverbuds about Independence Day.

You will need:

  • * A rectangle-shaped landscape paver (available at home improvement stores, garden centers or a local landscaper)
  • * Acrylic Paint: Red, White & Blue
  • * Paintbrushes
  • * Clear Acrylic Sealer

Be sure that pavers are clean and free of dirt. You may need to wash them prior to your meeting (spray them off with a garden hose and let them dry in the sun).

Using a pencil, draw a small rectangle (for the field of blue with stars) in the upper left hand corner of the paver. The size of this space depends on the size of your paper. (Use a proportion that's pleasing to you.) Depending on the age of your Cloverbuds, you may also want to draw lines for the stripes. They can paint the stripes freehand, as well.

The rectangle in the upper left hand corner should be painted blue. Once the blue background has dried, paint white dots on the blue to represent the stars. Talk to your Cloverbuds about how many stars are on the flag (50) and what each star represents. Have them paint the red and white stripes. Talk to them about what the stripes represent and why there are thirteen.

Once all of the paint has dried, spray it with clear adhesive sealer. Pavers are now ready to be proudly displayed indoors or out.

Weather Fun
Topic - Science/Technology

Just a few ideas about weather-related books and resources:

  • Check out the local TV stations for tours. It is a great place to learn about the way weather is tracked and then transmitted to the tv.
  • Check out Dorling Kindersley books on Weather and Outdoor Activities for great ideas for things to do with your kids.
  • Usborne books has lots of great resources on weather and science.
  • Look for some old copies of the Cub Scout and Boy Scout manuels for neat ideas on making weather stations and weathervanes.

Money Matters
Topic - Consumerism/Family Science

Here is a list of suggested reading to share with your child for the January 25th session:

  • The Berenstain Bears Trouble with Money by Stan and Jan Berenstain
  • Arthur's Funny Money by Lillian Hobran
  • Alexander Who Used to be Rich Last Sunday by Judith Viorst
  • Money by Robert Young
  • Food and Farming by Dorling Kindersley
  • Wiz Kids Guide to Success by Terri Thompson

I also recommend any of Larry Burkett's books on Money. They are a great addition to both children's and adult's education on the proper handling of money and include valuable information on getting out of debt and saving for the future.

Make A Plan
Topic - Healthy Life Style

Create fire escape plans for each floor of your house using graph paper to layout your floor plan. Make sure to clearly mark all exits, especially windows, with a red marker and be sure to include a designated meeting area away from your house (X marks the spot). Post your escape plan at your child's eye level in a conspicuous spot and make sure to practice fire drills on a regular basis. Also, make sure your child has a clear understanding of how to use the 911 access. Going over telephone numbers and addresses with your child while driving to appointments or while eating dinner will help to reinforce the information for your child and open up communication with your family to discuss "What if's...?"

Food Pyramid Fun
Topic - Nutrition

Here's a great idea to emphasize the food pyramid for your kids.

Collect old grocery store flyers and have your child cut out items from the food groups to paste onto 11 x 14 sheet of poster board on which you have drawn a pyramid. Go over each of the groups with your child and have them create "menus" using the food groups as a guide. For younger children, have them glue their menus onto a paper plate for each meal. For older children, involve them in the family menu planning and preparation, making sure to include the appropriate foods from each food group for each day.

Jell-O* Sand Painting
Topic - General

Get your tools:

  • paper
  • pencil
  • craft glue
  • different flavors of dry Jell-O
  • Salt Shakers with large holes or use your hands

Follow the directions: 1. With your pencil draw a picture on the paper. 2. Pour some glue on the paper, and spread thin all over the paper with your fingers. (If the picture is large, you may want to start at the top, and put the glue in one area at a time.) 3. Pour Jell-O into salt shakers that have large holes or use your hands. 4. Sprinkle the Jell-O to create a beautiful picture that smells good, too! 5. Wait until it dries before hanging.

Make A Family Flag
Topic - Our Flag

Design a flag that represents you. Some ideas for your flag: you can use symbols that represent your favorite activities, hobbies, sports, books, family members, friends, and where you live. On the back of your flag write about your flag, explain why you used the shapes, colors, and images that you did.

Get your tools:

  • paper or poster board
  • markers
  • craft glue/tape
  • scissors
  • photos (optional)
  • 3/4' dowel (optional)
  • clear con-tact paper (optional)

You could also do a "family flag" where all of your members put on symbols that are important to them. Cover it with Con-Tact paper and put it someplace where everyone will see it, like the refrigerator. That way your family will see it often and be reminded of how much fun it is to be together.
